11 crucial consumer trends for 2011

Trendwatching.com just released an interesting collection of 11 crucial consumer trends for 2011:

In 2011, there will be no excuses left not to be kind as a brand.
Are you ready for hundreds of millions of more daring, more experienced consumers? And that's just one side effect of rapid global urbanization.
Flash sales, group buying, GPS-driven deals: in 2011 pricing will never be the same.
In 2011, expect an increasing number of 'Western' brands to launch new products or even new brands dedicated (if not paying proper respect) to consumers in emerging markets.
In 2011, you can’t go wrong supplying your (online-loving) customers with any kind of symbol, virtual or 'real world', that helps them display to peers their online contributions, creations or popularity.
As good health is now as important to some consumers as having the biggest, newest or shiniest status symbols, growing numbers of consumers will expect health products and services in 2011 to prevent misery (if not improve their quality of life), rather than merely treating illnesses and ailments.
SOCIAL-LITES are all about discovery, as consumers become curators; actively broadcasting, remixing, compiling, commenting, sharing and recommending content, products, purchases, experiences to both their friends and wider audiences.
In 2011, brands and wealthy individuals from emerging markets (yes, especially China) will increasingly be expected to give, donate, care and sympathize versus just sell and take. And not just in their home countries, but on a global scale
With lifestyles having become fragmented, with dense urban environments offering consumers any number of instantly available options, and with cell/smartphones having created a generation who have little experience of making (or sticking to) rigid plans, 2011 will see full-on PLANNED SPONTANEITY.
When it comes to 'green consumption' in 2011, expect a rise in ECO-SUPERIOR products: products that are not only eco-friendly, but superior to polluting incumbents in every possible way.
2011 could be the year when sharing and renting really tips into mainstream consumer consciousness.

Evernote business model

Have a look at this great presentation of the CEO of evernote, Phil Libin:

A lot of things to learn from him. Here are the best points (taken from the TechCrunch Blog):

  • Sometimes people say “The best product doesn’t always win”, and are implying that you should focus on other areas, like marketing. In the Internet age, a good product can get the rest of that stuff (marketing, etc.) for free. So focus on that. And then charge for it.
  • A year ago Evernote was making most of its money from licensing its technology, but it focused on its premium plans ($5/month or $45/year) because that was more scalable. Now, premium subscriptions bring in around $300-400k a month, and licensing represents around $45k.
  • Evernote has 3.1 million cumulative users, and adds around 10k a day. Around 68k paying customers.
  • Users have grown more valuable over time. New users convert to premium at a rate of .5%.  But of the users that signed up two years ago and are still active, 20% have become paid customers.
  • This trend is important — most users quit quickly. But the ones that stay become much more likely to pay over time.
  • Evernote’s cost per user is around 9 cents per active user per month. It makes around 25 cents per user per month. The site reached break even a year and a half ago.
  • Entrepreneurs should aim to be making money on each new active user as soon as possible. Otherwise scaling just means you’re losing money faster, rather than earning it

And even if you thing that the summary is enough, watch the video. Phil is really great.

Wangerooge office

This is my office this week - our second home on the island of Wangerooge in the North Sea. No cars, just a wonderful beach - like the Sansibar beach, which is my favourite place on Sylt. A wonderful place to free your mind, to run with bare feet, to swim in the sea and finally to think, learn and work.

Smart drawings about life from BusinessPunk magazine

Starbucks Cards Can Now be Managed via Facebook

For all Starbucksies like me - found on Mashable at:

Thanks to Wolfgang Niederhausen´s facebook post.

Starbucks Cards Can Now be Managed via Facebook

As an early adopter brand, Starbucks has reaped the rewards of social media innovation. Today the company is furthering those efforts with a Facebook application for customers to access and manage their Starbucks cards.
The application will go live around 1:50 p.m. PDT today and will be accessible via Starbucks’ Facebook Page.  Essentially the application provides a virtual way to complete any card-related activity and even view a record of all transactions.
On the card management front, users can register (or unregister cards), check their balance, reload cards and edit profile information. The app also includes relevant rewards program information so frequent customers can check their status levels and benefits.
What’s even cooler is that come summer time, Starbucks will introduce functionality that will let users reload a Facebook friend’s Starbucks card as a gift through the application. Talk about an instant way to make a Facebook friend’s day.
Of course, most of the application’s functionality mirrors what you can already do via the Starbucks website and its iPhone app, but the Facebook app is all about convenience.
Product Manager Brad Nelson explained, “Our Facebook community is very vibrant with over seven million fans. We see this a great way to make it even easier to manage your Starbucks Card on Facebook. We can’t wait to make it easy to buy your friends a drink.”
Convenient it is. Given FacebookFacebookFacebook’s size and significance, we expect the application to be a huge hit for both customers and company.
Very Smart as so often. One of the reasons why I am a real Starbucks fan. My favourite is the Chai Tea Latte with soy milk - no I have to admit, I am addicted to it :-)

The smart thing about the Starbucks card is that you can use it to use the WIFI in the stores.
I always use this, when I am travelling to the US. See me older blog entry at:
