Office 2011 incl. Outlook for Mac to come in October 2010

For all of you, who (like me) love their Mac, but still work with Outlook in Parallels, here comes the solution:
Microsoft will bring Outlook to the Mac in October :-)

Here is a nice little video, with a short overview of the main new features:

I also like the new templates for Excel and I hope that the Pivot Tables will be working as well on the Mac as on Windows PCs.

Starbucks Cards Can Now be Managed via Facebook

For all Starbucksies like me - found on Mashable at:
http://ht.ly/1FGyG
Thanks to Wolfgang Niederhausen´s facebook post.

Starbucks Cards Can Now be Managed via Facebook

As an early adopter brand, Starbucks has reaped the rewards of social media innovation. Today the company is furthering those efforts with a Facebook application for customers to access and manage their Starbucks cards.
The application will go live around 1:50 p.m. PDT today and will be accessible via Starbucks’ Facebook Page.  Essentially the application provides a virtual way to complete any card-related activity and even view a record of all transactions.
On the card management front, users can register (or unregister cards), check their balance, reload cards and edit profile information. The app also includes relevant rewards program information so frequent customers can check their status levels and benefits.
What’s even cooler is that come summer time, Starbucks will introduce functionality that will let users reload a Facebook friend’s Starbucks card as a gift through the application. Talk about an instant way to make a Facebook friend’s day.
Of course, most of the application’s functionality mirrors what you can already do via the Starbucks website and its iPhone app, but the Facebook app is all about convenience.
Product Manager Brad Nelson explained, “Our Facebook community is very vibrant with over seven million fans. We see this a great way to make it even easier to manage your Starbucks Card on Facebook. We can’t wait to make it easy to buy your friends a drink.”
Convenient it is. Given FacebookFacebookFacebook’s size and significance, we expect the application to be a huge hit for both customers and company.
Very Smart as so often. One of the reasons why I am a real Starbucks fan. My favourite is the Chai Tea Latte with soy milk - no I have to admit, I am addicted to it :-)

The smart thing about the Starbucks card is that you can use it to use the WIFI in the stores.
I always use this, when I am travelling to the US. See me older blog entry at:

Maximize windows on your Mac like in Windows

For all of you, who also shifted from Windows to Mac, you might have run into the same problem:
The behaviour of the green window button seems to be like a lottery. Sometimes, the windows are maximized and sometimes they end up in a different size.

I found a freeware tool on:
http://www.blazingtools.com/downloads.html#rightZoom
to resolve this issue:

Right Zoom for Mac 1.63 - freeware (language: English)
Independent reviews from SwitchingToMac.com and BrightHub.com
This free tool fixes an inconvenient behavior of green Zoom button in Mac OS X. It will always expand windows on a full screen instead of strange resizing.
Last update: 06 Oct 2009;
Required: Mac OS X 10.4 or later (with Snow Leopard support)
File size: 416 KB;

Just download it, copy the program file into the application folder and double click it to start and configure it. It works :-)

Typing ü ö ä on the iPhone & iPod touch

I learned a great function on my iPod touch today: typing ü ö and ä.
I was so lucky to read this on: http://iszene.com/thread-49721.html

You just have to press u o or a and hold your finger on it. After a little while, the corresponding letter shows up and you can select it directly. Just push, hold and shift.

I love my iPod touch. I have tons of great apps on it and I will share more of my experiences with my gadgets in the future.

And guess who will be one of the first users of the iPad in Germany? :-)

iMemento flashcards for iPhone

And the next way to brain yourself:
http://imemento.bplaced.net/index.htm

This is a great flash card system for the iPhone or the iPod touch (the model I use).
You can create your own flashcards or download flashcards. You can find tons of flashcards on the iMemento webpage. You can enter data on the iPhone or on the PC/Mac. It works with a clever Browser-Interface.

So keep on training your brain - every day!

Homer Simpson as PC freak

New layout

Dear family and friends. As you can see, I have changed the layout of my blog.
The content is unchanged. This is really cool about blogging, that the content and the design is seperated, giving you a lot of flexibility.

A great webpage for blogger layouts is:
http://www.deluxetemplates.net/2009/05/2plus-templates-for-blogger.html

This is the source of my new template, too.

How do you like my new template?

Slideshare playlist

Here is the link to my slidehsare playlist:

This is the playlist for beyond budgeting:

Check out slideshare. It is a great knowledge sharing tool.

XING question application

I just learned a new functionality in XING. When you add the application XING Questions, you can post questions which can be answered by all XING Question users. I always used Twitter for this, but I definitely prefer the structured approach of XING.

To all my XING contacts: Please add the XING Question allplication to your profile, so that I can start asking stupid questions to you also :-)

Another application, you can add to your XING profile is slideshare. Have a look at my profile, to see how it works.

Tablets will replace e-book readers

For all of you who still think that the current e-book-readers are cool, have a look at this preview:

Apple is one of the players in the market who are currently working on these next generation media players.
So I am desperately waiting for these new toys for the boys and enjoy my Sony e-book-reader in the meantime.

For those iPhonies of you who cannot wait any longer: there is a kindle client for iPhone available at:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html/ref=ms_sbrspot_1?ie=UTF8&docId=1000301301&pf_rd_p=498990411&pf_rd_s=center-22&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B0015T963C&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0TRFBVTHG79ME9E3W06N

Get abstract book summaries on my e-book reader

For all of you who just can´t get enough of brainfood, like me, have a look at

This is a great service, where you can subscribe to abstracts of classic and current management books and other literature. They also offer a premium rate, where you can download unlimited abstracts.

I use this service to scan the new management literature and to decide, which books I want to read. In addition it gives me a lot of input in a very short time.
An alternative is: http://www.summary.com/
These are the executive book summaries from Soundview.

A great way to read the summaries on the go is one of the new e-book-readers.
I use the Sony e-book-reader, which has a native pdf support.
It is a great way to safe weight while travelling, as it carries tons of books in its memory.
You can even read in the bright sunshine and the battery lasts for more than a day, as it only needs power, when you turn the page.

You can find more infos on it at: http://www.sony.de/hub/reader-ebook

You now can e-mail interesting posts to your friends.

Proquest-Great full text research tool for articles and thesises

My main tool for the literature research for my PhD is Proquest.
You can find it at:
http://www.proquest.co.uk/en-UK/

You can even find DBA and PhD thesises in full text from 2009. Another nice functionality is, that you can see the articles that cited the found article. This allows crawling through the literature not only backwards, but also forward. You can also subscribe to a RSS feed of your search. Then you always get an update in your RSS reader when a new article or thesis is online which has the criteria of your search. I use the google reader for this (as I can access it online from all of my or other PCs).

A really great way to find the most recent articles on your topic. This is so much easier than spending hours in the library like it used to be in the past. I love the internet for this.

For all of you who are enrolled at a university for their DBA or PhD studies, most of the universities have a university login to give full access to their students. I have one from my university (School of Management at the University of Bradford).
